Rawson’s King Mill County Park

Archaeological Museum
Leonidas, the fifth century Spartan king, is one of the most famous Greek hero tales. His stand against the Persian army is a legendary tale of Greek heroism. He led his Spartan forces at the battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE, where he attempted to stop the Persian invasion of Greece. After the battle, his body was brought back to Sparta and was worshipped as a hero by his people. His plume is on display, which he wore in battle.
The Leonidaion is an ancient tomb of Leonidas, and the only monument of this type from Sparta’s Ancient Agora. It was excavated by Waldstein in 1892, and it contains two chambers and elaborate rectangular stone blocks of unusual proportions. While its purpose is unclear, the monument remains one of the best preserved monuments from Ancient Agora.
To learn more about Leonidas, visit the Tomb of Leonidas, which is located in Dienekou, north of Sparta. It dates from the 5th century BC and is the only remaining monument from the ancient Agora.
