The Sheldon Art Association, founded in 1888, has more than 12,000 pieces in its permanent collection. The museum is located at 310 Tenth Street in Sheldon, Iowa. The building was originally the Carnegie Library. The library operated until 1969, when it moved to another location. In 1976, the Sheldon Historical Society petitioned the city council to designate the building as a museum.
The museum also houses an after-hours depository for a local bank. It’s located near the display of items from a 1920s Klan meeting. The museum’s owner, Vos, wants to preserve this history. “Red Sea” was chosen for this project because of its local and national importance. The work was donated by Hines’ widow Dorothy Fisher, who gave permission for the reproduction. Public Art Lincoln also selected this work because of its bold geometric patterns that can easily be transferred from the museum’s collection to a basketball court.
