Hoover Dam

The new power is expected to save Mesquite about $85 per megawatt-hour. Currently, the city purchases about 2 megawatts of power each month from the Overton Power District.
The Hoover Dam was originally intended to open in the fall of 1931. However, the Great Depression hit the country, and Herbert Hoover wanted to begin construction earlier. This would alleviate the high unemployment rate. Eventually, construction began in the summer of 1931, a year ahead of schedule.
