The city of Metropolis is located along the banks of the Ohio River in Massac County, Illinois. It has a population of approximately 6,537. It is the county seat of Massac County and is part of the Paducah, KY-IL Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Superman statue
Metropolis, Illinois, is home to a 2 ton bronze statue honoring the man known as Superman. The town even claims to be the birthplace of the comic book character. Originally, the statue was supposed to be part of the Amazing World of Superman theme park, but that never happened. The original statue was supposed to be hundreds of feet high and be a major landmark in the city. The statue is not the only iconic icon in Metropolis, however. The city has developed a whole culture around its hero. The city has a Kryptonite meteorite on the corner of Third and Ferry Streets, and there are giant cut-outs of Superman and Lois Lane in several stores. Nearby is the Super Museum, which houses a $2.5 million collection of Superman memorabilia.
There is also a statue in Metropolis that honors Stan Lee, a comic book legend who passed away this week. The statue is 15 feet tall and features a blue spandex costume and flowing red cape. It’s located near the local police department. During the holiday season, the statue sports a giant Santa hat. During the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic, the statue will wear a giant face mask.
In June 1972, the Illinois House of Representatives and the DC Comics corporation declared Metropolis, Illinois the “Home of Superman.” A 50 million dollar theme park was planned for the city, with visitors entering under the statue and strolling through town.
Fort Massac State Park

The event is held in conjunction with Superman Days in Metropolis.
The Super Museum houses more than 70,000 pieces of Superman memorabilia. Among them is the only Superman costume worn by George Reeves. It also features a variety of other Superman items. The museum is run by Hambrick Enterprises, which owns and manages the museum.
Harrah’s Metropolis Casino

The George Rogers Clark Discovery Trail is an eight-mile long trail that connects the towns of Metropolis and Brookport in Massac County. It winds through Fort Massac State Park and crosses Massac Creek in the east. Hikers, bikers, and nature enthusiasts can enjoy this park on foot or by bicycle.
The trail was constructed in 2010 and is ADA accessible. This park features over 50 sites to explore. Aside from the trail itself, the park features a historic fort and several picnic areas. Today, visitors can explore the fort’s rich history by hiking the eight-mile George Rogers Clark Discovery Trail.
Fort Massac State Park is another great place to enjoy the George Rogers Clark Discovery Trail. Fort Massac was the state’s first state park, and it contains a recreated fort, a visitor center, and several park amenities. The trail itself follows the former Illinois Central Gulf Railroad bed and is mostly on low-speed shared-use roadway.
