Laconia’s industrial heritage

Laconia’s industrial heritage dates back to the nineteenth century, when mills and other industries were established in the area. Before this, the region was mostly comprised of pastures and farms. The progressive industries of the day provided factory jobs for residents, a welcome change from farming. By the late 1800s, there were as many people employed in industry as in agriculture. Farmers no longer had to worry about crops failing and were able to focus on their jobs.

During the 19th century, Laconia’s industrial heritage included the building of a water-powered mill, the Belknap Mill. This mill was constructed in 1823, and it still stands today, mostly undamaged. It is one of the oldest mills in the United States, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. It also features a water-powered wheelhouse, the only one of its kind in the United States, which once supplied the city’s downtown area. The mill also had a large machine shop, dyeing and spinning mills. The Ranlet Car Company played an important role in the development of the city.

During the early years of the industrial revolution, the Laconia Mill led the way in the industry. These mill owners endured many challenges, including the need for increased production and competition from industries in the South and foreign lands. They eventually installed a state-of-the-art power system to run their mill, and later it was nearly destroyed during urban renewal. Thankfully, a group of businessmen managed to fight for the mill’s survival.

Another part of Laconia’s industrial history is the Belknap Mill, which began operations in 1823 and was fully operational by 1828. It produced textile products until 1969. Today, it is the only remaining example of this early stage of the industrial revolution in the United States. Though the mill has had several owners, it has maintained its importance as a cultural center for the area.
