Rainbow Village
Huang’s artwork is a blend of surrealism, humor, and childlike love. Some people have called him the Hayao Miyazaki of Taiwan. Many of his paintings are based on animals. Although his “village” is little more than a collection of homes, there are about half a dozen small interconnected buildings. Visitors can spend an hour exploring this whimsical community.
While Taiwan has a large number of art and culture parks, Rainbow Village is unique. Unlike other Taiwanese tourist destinations, Rainbow Village isn’t sponsored by the government. Huang, who is 98 years old, lives in the village and continues to paint. He is also a friendly face to greet visitors. Huang’s partner, Wei Pi-ren, has been supporting him since 2010. Both of them share the vision for the village: to be a place of fun, healing, and romance.
The community is smoke-free and has two-story three, four, and five bedroom apartment units. Residents can bring their pets to Rainbow Village. Pets are welcome as long as they comply with the PCHA’s pet policy. On-site, the Boys and Girls Club of the Suncoast and Head Start provide year-round activities for children. The PCHA employs bilingual staff who can assist with any language barriers.
Huang Yung-fu, an elderly war veteran, was born in Guangdong province in southern China in 1924. He joined the army at fifteen and fought against the Japanese during the Second Sino-Japanese War. He later joined the Kuomintang army in the Chinese Civil War, fighting against Mao Zedong’s Communist army. Huang is one of the few remaining residents of Rainbow Village.
