Historic farm
The Stafford Farm is a historic 100-acre farm located in Voorhees Township, New Jersey. The land was once used by Leni Lenape Native Americans for travel. In 1773, it was settled by John Stafford, the son of a man who had previously owned the Short Hills Farm in Cherry Hill.
Voorhees Township was named for Foster McGowan Voorhees, the governor of New Jersey who granted permission to Voorhees to become its own township. The township’s name derives from the Dutch word “voor”, which means “in front of”. The town was originally part of a village in Ruinen, Drenthe.
The township’s early years were characterized by limited development. Before the turn of the century, the area was populated primarily by farmers. In 1900, the township had about 900 residents. In 1854, the Camden and Atlantic Railroad reached Voorhees, which provided access to Philadelphia. The railroad helped the township sell its produce and drew people from the city. In addition, the railroad brought visitors and newspapers to the town.
