The Kinsella Log Cabin is a historic structure located in Pleasant Ridge Park in Fairview Heights, Illinois. The Kinsella family built the log cabin in the 1860s and had it restored in 1976 to commemorate the National Bicentennial. It was originally constructed of white oak and walnut logs and featured a central fireplace. In the 1970s, Larry Kinsella, a carpenter for his father, took dozens of photos to document the restoration process. Today, the Kinsella cabin has undergone some renovation, though the clapboard siding is still in place. Roof replacement has begun, as well.

Pleasant Ridge Park has a 1.5-mile loop trail that begins near the park pavilion and continues through the woods. It crosses a picturesque bridge and leads out behind the Union City Area School District property. According to the Let’s Get Outside! website, the Pleasant Ridge Park Trail can be hazardous because of downed trees. Nevertheless, the park is an oasis that you and your family can enjoy.

Pleasant Ridge Park is a favorite getaway for local residents. Located about 40 minutes from downtown Greenville, Pleasant Ridge Park offers several recreational activities for the entire family. The park also features a historic log cabin that represents Fairview Heights’ early history. It was built by the Kinsella family around 1850. Other amenities at the Pleasant Ridge Park include playgrounds and four picnic pavilions. During the winter, the park also offers sledding.

There are five slides, a maze board, stepping stones, animals trackers, steering wheels, and plenty of poles to climb on. The playground is themed around nature. It includes an eight-foot-tall concrete tree and an “anthill” for climbing. In addition, there are rope walks fashioned like trees. The park also has four sling swings.

Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site

Visit the world-famous Cahokia Mounds State Park in Collinsville, Illinois, to learn about the prehistoric culture of the people who lived here. The 144-acre plot of land, which includes Monks Mound, is now a state park managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. UNESCO has declared this site a World Heritage Site.

The Cahokia Mounds Visitor Center houses museum exhibit galleries, an auditorium for public programs and orientation shows, restrooms, and a snack-food service. The facility also has a wheelchair accessible entrance and offers accessible guided tours. Visiting the site requires wearing comfortable walking shoes, a hat, and sunblock. You’ll also want to bring bottled water and insect repellent.

You can explore the ancient city before the 1800s, which was the largest in the Americas until the arrival of French and American settlers. After the French and American settlers moved away, the land was used for farming. In the early 1900s, attempts to establish a park at the site were unsuccessful. In fact, Warren K. Moorehead discovered that the mounds were man-made.

The Cahokia city was populated for a period of six centuries from 700 A.D. and was home to 10,000 to 20,000 people. They built over a hundred mounds over the course of time, most of which had been enlarged several times. The city was surrounded by vast agricultural fields.

The Cahokia Mounds State historic site is a unique and unusual historical site that is well worth a visit. The entire site is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. Its updated Master Management Plan addresses the protection, preservation, interpretation, and research of the State Historic Site. The organization provides professional staff to manage the site, and a staffed interpretive centre opened in 1989.
