Marine Drive
A motorcycle accident on Marine Drive in Scarborough has left one man dead and left many mourning. Michael John Sanders, a beloved dad, brother, uncle, and friend, was killed on July 19 in a collision between two vehicles. One of the vehicles was a black and orange Honda CBR motorcycle, while the other was a red Ford Transit van.
In the past, this location was a popular fishing spot. It is part of the headland that divides the town’s north and south bays. At one time, anglers flocked to the area, as it was convenient for all types of anglers. In summer months, dozens of fishermen lined the road, with plenty of fish caught.
Fuller Farm Trails
The Fuller Farm Trails are a great location for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and walking. One trail parallels a scenic brook and leads to a waterfall with a picnic table. The Scarborough Land Trust acquired Fuller Farm in 2000. It was a former homestead and contains 3,500 feet of frontage on the Nonesuch River. The farm also features 70 acres of field that are hayed each year to provide nesting habitat for birds and other wildlife.
The Fuller Farm Trail is located on a formerly-working farm that has been replanted with mixed forests and a hayfield managed for Bobolink habitat. There is also a spring water fall on the property, which feeds the Nonesuch River. A bridge over the waterfall has an observatory that overlooks the river and captures the changing flow. The Fuller Farm Trails project also includes an additional 30 acres of land from Blue Rock Industries.
The Fuller Farm Trails are 2.5 miles long and cover a variety of surfaces. Some are grassy, while others are gravel. The terrain is moderate, but the trails may be muddy in spring. The trails are marked with a kiosk and large green signs.
South Cliff Gardens
The restoration of South Cliff Gardens in Scarborough has begun and has been funded through the National Lottery Community Fund and Heritage Fund. The project aims to preserve the gardens’ heritage and reconnect them with modern visitors and residents. The project is led by the South Cliff Community Group. The park’s public facilities are currently undergoing major improvements. The new improvements include the restoration of garden shelters, the opening of the Cliff Lift Tunnel, the creation of a family hub and play area, and the construction of a new community and operations building. During the restoration, pathways have been delineated so that they can be used by people of all abilities.
Visitors can explore South Cliff Gardens, which are situated near the town’s clock tower. The gardens contain various features such as a rowing boat, palm trees, and Victorian rose garden. The park was recently renovated with PS49,800 of heritage lottery funding. A film was also made of the gardens to promote Heritage Open Days 2020.
There is also a woodland path that leads to the Star Disk, the UK’s largest star map. This unique attraction sits where the South Bay pool once stood. The star map features 42 fibre optic light points that show the brightest stars in the northern sky. The Pole Star is located almost in the center of the map.
Naval Warfare Show
The Naval Warfare Show in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, has been entertaining visitors and locals for over 75 years. Located in Peasholm Park, the show began in 1927 with a model of a First World War battleship, the Dreadnaught. It later expanded to include mystery ships, passenger liners and U-boats. After the Second World War, the show was upgraded and new models were added to the fleet. It was then that the Battle of River Plate was recreated.
Peasholm Park, a beautiful and oriental themed municipal park, was opened in Scarborough in 1912. The park includes an artificial boating lake, a putting green and a champion tree walk. Although the park suffered from a decline in the 1970s, it has recently been restored with the help of Heritage Lottery Funding.
