Laurel’s House of Horror
Laurel’s House of Horror is a haunted house located in a former movie theater located within the Laurel Centre Mall. It opened in September 2014 and is known as one of the top haunted houses in the Washington, D.C. area. The haunted attraction challenges visitors to solve puzzles and escape themed rooms within an hour. While many haunted houses are seasonal, Laurel’s is open year-round.
The house itself is filled with animatronics and actors dressed in costumes. The rooms are filled with details that make it feel like you’re walking through a big budget horror movie set. The experience is not only visually amazing, but it also features sound effects and layers and textures that make for an unforgettable experience.
The Conley family built the house in 1928. They later sold it four years later. The family’s old residence, listed in the Fairland Master Plan, is located less than a block away. Though not historically designated, the older residence is the centerpiece of the Green Ridge farm.

Fairland is in southern Ottawa County and is bisected by U.S. Highway 60 and State Highway 125. In 1871, Fairland was laid out along the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway track that ran from Missouri to Vinita. Later, the KO&G tracks in Fairland were abandoned and Fairland grew to a population of 1,057.
The Fairland News was first published in 1895. It was followed by the Fairland Newsboy and Fairland Herald in the early twentieth century. These publications operated out of two-story frame buildings. During the 1920s, the newspaper moved to a three-story brick building.
Haunted house

Grumblethorpe, a former summer home of the Wister family, is said to be haunted by the bloody spirit of British Gen. James Agnew, who was fatally wounded inside the house during the Battle of Germantown. A bloodstain on the floor of the house is a testament to this legend.
