If you’re a lover of the works of Eliot, then you can visit the Holy Trinity Church to commemorate her life. The poet attended the church, but later left it for her freethinking beliefs. While her father was upset about this, he eventually made a deal with her, as long as she would attend church occasionally. Today, a plaque commemorates her time in the church from 1840-49.
The Raitt Homestead Farm
The Raitt Homestead Farm is a farm museum located in Eliot, Maine. The homestead was built in 1896 on 33 acres. The original owner, Charles A. Raitt, manufactured bricks, ran a sawmill, and grew an orchard. After his death, his son, Roland, inherited the farm.
The Raitt Homestead Farm Museum is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that teaches about farming history and how to conserve nature. The George Eliot Memorial Garden
The George Eliot Memorial Garden is located in Nuneaton, and is comprised of two acres of greenery. The memorial garden is home to several places connected to the writer’s early life. It was opened to the public on May 1, 1952. It includes an obelisk carved in blue granite that was originally located in Arbury Park. Each year, on the anniversary of the writer’s birth, a wreath-laying ceremony is held at the memorial garden.
The garden is named after the author and the town in which she was born. It also includes a statue of Mrs. Lewis, the Evangelical who influenced Eliot’s writing. The memorial is a tribute to the woman who was a trail-blazer for female writers. The event is being hosted by Professor Ruth Livesey of Royal Holloway University, who is working with the GEF and schools to create a legacy for the bicentenary of her birth. There will be tea and readings at this event.
On October 20, the church referred to as St. Paul’s Parish Church in Paddiford Common was dedicated to George Eliot. The church was located in a town where Eliot was born, and she wrote about it in her novel, Scenes from Clerical Life. The Rev Mick Vincent, vicar at St. Paul’s, was present at the ceremony.
There are many other places to visit near the George Eliot Memorial Garden, including the McCarthy & Stone Residential Home and Nuneaton Job Centre. In addition, the nearby Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery contains three galleries with changing exhibitions. Within 520 feet of the memorial garden, you’ll also find the Gold Belt, a public sculpture under the Vicarage Road bridge.
