Located in Harford County, Maryland, Edgewood is a census-designated place and unincorporated community. As of the 2010 census, the population was 25,562, compared to 23,378 in 2000. The area is home to a variety of parks and attractions, including Heritage Park, Gunpowder Falls State Park, and Cinnaholic.
Gunpowder Falls State Park
For outdoor recreation, the public can visit Gunpowder Falls State Park. This public recreation area is comprised of six non-contiguous areas that cover 18,000 acres in northeastern Baltimore and western Harford counties. The park features six distinct waterfalls, six streams, and a number of hiking and biking trails.
The park offers hiking, biking, and camping. It is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is located in the northwestern part of Baltimore and is surrounded by beautiful stream valleys. There are more than 100 miles of trails that visitors can enjoy.
The park is also home to Jerusalem Mill Village, a living history museum with buildings dating back to the 18th and early twentieth centuries. The mill village is one of the oldest in the state of Maryland. It is the headquarters of Gunpowder Falls State Park and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors to the park can take guided kayak and canoe trips or go fly-fishing.
The park also has a 19.7-mile multi-use surfaced rail trail that extends from Ashland, MD to the Pennsylvania line. Its Sweet Air Area is a popular hiking and horseback-riding area. The park is also home to two waterfalls – Little Gunpowder Falls and Big Gunpowder Falls.
Edgewood City Park
There are several places to visit in Edgewood City Park. The park is located just two minutes off of the 280 freeway and includes four hundred and sixty acres of grasslands and woodlands. It is home to 550 different species of plants, including 10 species that are endangered. The park is particularly beautiful in the spring when the wildflowers bloom in spectacular displays. The park also offers docent-led tours so that you can learn about all of the plants.
The park features over 10 miles of trails that wind through woodland and grassland. These trails offer beautiful views of the Santa Cruz Mountains and San Francisco Bay. There are also several equestrian trails in the park. The park closes at a pre-set time before sunset.
The park is perfect for families, as it offers a picturesque setting. A dog park is also available for owners. Dog owners should make sure their dog has all of the proper vaccinations and is registered with the city. This dog park is a great place to take your dog for a day of fun in the sun.
Heritage Park
Located in the heart of Edgewood, Heritage Park is a bicentennial project that preserves and interprets rural life in East Texas. It features replica and authentic buildings that depict rural life in the region during the 1800s. The park is a destination for history lovers and a teaching tool for local schools.
Visitors can tour the park’s historic buildings and exhibits, including the brick Edgewood Calaboose. The Poor Farm Water Tower is another popular place for visitors to see. A visit to the museum also allows visitors to see the inside of a real working jail.
Edgewood began as a settlement in the mid-1840s. Early settlers came from the eastern states and were displaced from the native Caddo Indians. While farming was the main industry, the Texas and Pacific Railroad went through the town in 1873. The railroad was an important link to Canton after the County Seat War. In 1878, a new shipping point was needed. The Texas and Pacific Railroad went from the Canton county seat to Stephens Switch and the city of Edgewood was born. Today, the town is home to retirees and commuters alike.
Cinnaholic
There are many ways to find delicious treats near your home, and one of the best is visiting your local Cinnaholic. This locally owned bakery specializes in gourmet cinnamon rolls, cookies, brownies, and cookie dough. With over 40 flavors of frosting and customizable catering, you can find something to satisfy every taste and occasion. What’s more, their products are all vegan, dairy-free, and egg-free.
The first Atlanta location of the vegan gourmet cinnamon roll company is set to open on June 2 in the Edgewood Retail District. Another location is planned to open in Athens, Georgia in the summer, and eight more in the Atlanta area within the next two years. Founded in 2014 by Shannon Radke and Florian Radke, the company has expanded across the country.
The Edgewood location is the first Cinnaholic to open on the east coast. The bakery offers customizable cinnamon rolls, which can include many toppings and thirty different flavors of frosting. The Edgewood location will replace Soho Gifts. The original Cinnaholic opened in Berkley, California in 2010.
In addition to their vegan menu, you can find delicious treats at Cinnaholic locations throughout Edgewood. With over 30 flavors of ice cream and cookies, this bakery is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. The Edgewood location also offers brownies and cookies.
Cibola National Forest
The Cibola National Forest covers more than 1.6 million acres in New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. There are several ranger districts in this area. The Sandia and Mountainair districts are closest to Edgewood, and the Mt. Taylor Ranger District is further west between Albuquerque and Gallup. Both districts are great places for outdoor recreation.
The Rio Grande Nature Center State Park is a great spot for bird watching throughout the year. It also offers two miles of nature trails and seasonal events and classes. The Cibola National Forest, a vast area of nearly 1.9 million acres, is also a good place to go hunting and mountain biking.
The historic Old Route 66 runs through the Cibola National Forest. This road was built in 1926 and followed the trail of Apache raiders to the west. It then curled south and curved in a southwestern direction towards Santa Fe and Las Vegas. A section of the road in Edgewood was later shortened to allow drivers to cut off to Santa Fe.
The town of Edgewood was originally settled by settlers coming from the east on the old wagon trail that went through Santa Rosa. It was incorporated in the early 1930s in the southern part of Santa Fe county. Many descendants of the founding families of this town still live there. In fact, Edgewood was originally called Venus.
Aristocrat model Valentine diner
If you are a lover of old diners and want to see an authentic one, you should stop by the Aristocrat model Valentine diner in the town of Edgewood, New Mexico. The diner was built in the 1940s and has eight booths that serve food. The diner has been preserved and restored by its former owner Jerry Ueckert.
The diner is a classic Aristocrat model and has served the community for 70 years. Originally located in Magdalena, New Mexico, the diner was moved to its present location, Wildlife West Nature Park, to preserve its historical value. Today, the Aristocrat Valentine diner is a tourist attraction.
The diner is a true icon of mid-century Americana, with its iconic box shape and flying buttress corners, metal construction, streamline trim, and angled neon sign above the entrance. The interior of the diner usually had a row of black and white bar stools and a jukebox in the back corner. The quality of the materials used to build the diner made it durable. Many Valentine diners are still operating today, though some have been converted to other businesses or converted into private residences.
The Valentine diner was shipped across the country, often serving as the only restaurant in small towns. While the Valentine diners were successful, Valentine’s health started to fail and his involvement dwindled. He died in 1954 and the diner business was sold to the Radcliff family in 1957. The diners continued operating until August 1968.
