Chanute Historical Museum

The town is in the South East Kansas region and may become a ghost town in ten years. However, most residents are fine with this situation. The town also has a Wright Brothers Memorial, which is located at 1 West Main. The memorial was dedicated in 1941 by the Chanute High School Class. It honors Octave Chanute, the engineer who helped the Wright Brothers build their railroad through the town and inspired the Wright Brothers to pursue their dream of flying. The museum includes a replica of the Wright Brothers’ plane, measuring more than twenty feet nose to tail.
The city’s public school system includes an elementary school, middle school, and high school. Chanute Elementary School serves children in preschool to sixth grade, while Royster Middle School serves kindergarten through twelfth grade. There are also two private schools, Chanute Christian Academy and Saint Patrick Catholic School, but neither of these are accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE).
