The first traces of a chateau in Sully date back to the 11th century. It served as a defense post on the royal river. The actual Chateau de Sully was built in 1567 for Marechal Gaspard de Saulx, who was an important figure at the court of King Henri II of France. In the 1960s, the town’s General Council of Loiret purchased the castle. It is open to the public daily, except on Mondays.

The castle is divided into several floors. The ground floor has a kitchen, pantry, and dining room. Upstairs, there’s a large sitting room and an antechamber. The first floor’s main living quarters include a large and elegant 18th-century room, which has an antechamber and a bedroom with an en suite bathroom. A side wing has a Great Hall and King’s bedroom, which are decorated with paintings by various descendants of the Sully family. The castle also has a garrison room with a timber-framed roof and a rampart walk. A spiral staircase connects the different floors of the castle.

The castle is located about 70 miles from Blois, which makes it an ideal base from which to explore the other castles in the Loire Valley. The best way to get there is by car, which takes about an hour and a half. The other option is to take the train or bus from Blois. Sully is in the Welsh county of Glamorgan, on the northern coast of the Bristol Channel. It lies approximately halfway between Barry and Penarth, and seven miles south-west of Cardiff. It is named for the local manor, which was first owned by the de Sully family in the twelfth century.

In the early 20th century, the estate sold various lands in the parish. The final sale of these lands took place in 1914 at a public auction. The main purchaser was Lieutenant-Commander Charles E. Evans, RNVR, who split the overall holding of Sully into a number of rented houses. By 1956, the estate was operated as a private limited letting company, Evans’ Estate (1956) Ltd.

The Vale of Glamorgan is home to approximately 740 listed buildings. Approximately 4% of these are Grade I and 10% are Grade II*. Listed buildings are protected by law and require Listed Building Consent before any changes are made.
