St. Mary of Czstochowa

The parish has been providing basic spiritual services to the community for more than a century. Services are held daily, including Mass in three languages. The parish also offers novenas and missions. The church’s name comes from a miraculous shrine in Czestochowa, Poland. The church was dedicated on March 10, 1918, by Archbishop George W. Mundelein.
The first pastor was Father John Czajkowski. Father Czajkowski died in 1939 and was replaced by Rev. Francis Nogajewski, who served the parish until July 1940. In 1902, the parish also opened a mission called St. Attracta in the Grant Works and northeast areas. The church also served the Polish and English-speaking community in Cicero. In 1903, the Western Electric Company opened a plant in Hawthorne, Illinois. By the end of the decade, the company became Cicero’s largest employer.
Cicero is home to St. Mary of Czstochowa parish, a Polish Catholic church that is part of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Morton East High School
Morton East High School is a public secondary school located in Cicero, Illinois. It is one of three high schools in the J. Sterling Morton High School District 201. The school houses students from sophomore through senior year. Freshman Center is located on the same campus for one year.
A student reported an automatic weapon, which caused the school to lockdown Tuesday morning. A half-day was cancelled after police determined there was no threat. The lockdown took place around 10:30 a.m. and was lifted shortly after. A police search of the school found no weapons.
Morton East High School has more than 500 students and is a part of the J. Sterling Morton High School District. It is accredited by the North Central Association and the Illinois State Board of Education. It employs more than 50 teachers and paraprofessionals. The school is involved in numerous community initiatives, including Operation Christmas Child, a Thanksgiving food drive, and a Tsunami relief fund.
The high school was built in 1894 and named for J. Sterling Morton, who was a local politician. It was home to a nationally renowned music department, which took up three floors of the building in the northeast corner. The second floor housed offices, while the third floor had individual practice rooms and choral rehearsal rooms. The elevators took instruments to the auditorium.
Morton East has a rich history of sports. In the early 1980s, Morton East represented the area in the state AA swimming final. One of its wrestlers, Janet Bertkowics, also represented the school at state.
