Maymont

Maymont is a 100-acre Victorian estate in Richmond, Virginia. Maymont is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but it is closed from March to September because of the coronavirus pandemic. While admission to the estate is free, a suggested donation of $5 per attraction is appreciated. For those who are not interested in touring the mansion, a visit to the nearby Robins Nature Center costs $8 per adult and $6 per child aged three to 12 years old.

The gardens are a highlight of Maymont. You can visit the Japanese Garden, Italian Garden, specialty gardens, and Arboretum. Many of the gardens are free to see, and they change seasonally. Visitors will be impressed by the beautiful architecture, grand trees, and variety of plants.

If you are planning a trip to Rustburg, don’t skip Maymont Park. This 100-acre park features a museum and a children’s farm. You can spend an entire day here, and there is no way you could see everything.

The grounds of Maymont are home to an impressive collection of animals. Among the resident species are bald eagles, black bears, and foxes. There are also several gazebos and ten specialty gardens. Marie’s Butterfly Garden was finished in 2009, and it is located along the cow and horse pastures. You can also find numerous varieties of herbs in the Herb Garden.

Maymont Mansion is a well-preserved, nineteenth-century house museum. It illustrates the complicated interplay of class and race. The museum was the subject of a decade-long research project. The museum opened to the public six months after the death of Mrs. Dooley. The upper floors of the mansion were relatively unchanged until the Maymont Foundation took over the estate in 1975.
