Woolen Mill

The first mill was built by John Harris, the eldest of six sons. Harris was 20 when his father died, and he shared responsibility with his younger siblings. John was a sailor during his early life, and he fought in the Napoleonic Wars. Later, he married Jane Wetherald, the sister of another man named William. Eventually, the three brothers started a mill and built a reputation for quality goods.
During the First World War, the Rockwood Woolen Mill was able to keep up with the demands. It operated twenty-four hours a day, and produced thousands of army blankets. However, the mill closed due to stiff competition from larger mills. However, the mill’s name has been preserved as a landmark.
After William Harris closed the mill, he decided to make it a private park for the community. This 190-acre property contained spectacular riverside scenery and three pavilions for picnics. The park welcomed tourists and church groups. In the late 1950s, the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) began negotiations with Harris and completed the purchase of the land in 1962.
The original Woolen Mill on the site was constructed of wood and burned down in 1880. In 1884, a stone woolen mill was built. This stone building was built using limestone that was quarried and dressed in Rockwood. The date stones on the walls of the mill indicate the year the mill was constructed.
