The company was formed when residents who wanted to volunteer for the Oaklyn Fire Department found that the roster was already full. Because of this, the company was named Welcome Fire Company.

The city was home to several fire departments, including Oaklyn Fire Company No. 1. In 1902, the company was located near the Suburban Lumber Company, the scene of many famous Camden County fires. The fire company’s building still stands, though it is a private residence. The fire company was started by residents of Oaklyn who had previously volunteered with the Defender Fire Company, which was located in Haddon Township.
