Naturalistic gardens

If you love to spend time outdoors, naturalistic gardens are the perfect places to visit in Long Hill. Alternatively, you can purchase an on-site pass that gives you access to the gardens throughout the year.

Located in Beverly, Long Hill was originally owned by the Sedgwick family. Originally a summer house, the estate was converted into a year-round residence in the 1950s. Mabel Cabot Sedgwick was a highly accomplished gardener and her husband, Ellery Sedgwick, a noted writer and editor of The Atlantic Monthly, had an inclination towards rare plants. Their combined creative vision led to the design of the estate, which is surrounded by 100 acres of woodland.

The gardens are open daily from dawn to dusk and offer a variety of different types of plants. There are formal and native perennial gardens, a mountain laurel allee, a children’s garden, and a pollinator-wildlife garden. The grounds are also open for tours. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the gardens or join a guided tour. Depending on the time of year, there may be special events taking place.

Woodland trails

The 150-acre estate was purchased by King Zog in 1951 but he never lived there and sold it a few years later. Today, you can walk the trails through the estate and find old pagodas and decrepit architecture. You may encounter graffiti along the trails. Because the area has been used for so long, the landscape has undergone some changes. Still, you’ll find many reasons to stop and explore.

If you’re interested in hiking, you might want to visit the woodland trails. This trail runs along the eastern edge of Shelter Island and offers breathtaking views of the marsh waters. While the trails are not widely used, they are great places to enjoy nature photography or birdwatching.

The hike is not as strenuous as the Blue Ridge Trail, but the scenery is spectacular. You can see the Cortina ridge and Glascock mountain from this viewpoint. During your walk, you’ll see a variety of birds and other wildlife.
