Stirling’s Harvey River Settlement
During the 1830s, Governor Stirling selected 12,800 acres in the Harvey River area for the settlement of white settlers. In addition to establishing the settlement, he built a convict-built cottage on the site. The cottage featured a shingled roof and pit-sawn jarrah walls. It also had firm flooring and hexagonal-shaped paving blocks. Today, visitors can visit a replica of the convict-built cottage, known as Stirling’s Cottage, and view its original paving blocks.
The original settlement area was named Wellington Location 50A and was 52 square kilometres (12,800 acres). Stirling built a hunting lodge near Harvey called “The Hut” which included hexagonal paving blocks and jarrah walls. The hut was later the childhood home of children’s author May Gibbs. Stirling also referred to the area surrounding Harvey as ‘Korijekup’, meaning ‘place of red-tailed black cockatoo’.
In 1830, Stirling’s settlement became an official part of the Western Australian Legislative Council. Despite this, he continued to be unsympathetic to the Aboriginal population and never recognised their rights over the land. His actions in the colony were even warned against by the Buxton Committee in the British House of Commons. Nevertheless, he did mention in dispatches that local governments should take action to prevent the extinction of the Aboriginal race.
The settlement also included a small settlement on the Harvey River. The settlement is the oldest European settlement in the region. In 1819, the settlement had approximately five thousand inhabitants. However, the area was later subdivided into several smaller villages. The settlements remained under the British occupation for many years.
At this time, western Australia was still known as New Holland. Although the Dutch had no interest in developing the region, the British had a strong interest. They considered that establishing a port on the north or west coast of the continent would be advantageous for trade. Meanwhile, the French were also known to be interested in the country. These developments led to a need for a survey of the region. Sir John Stirling was a natural choice for the job.
The area has been renamed for a number of reasons, the first being that the town was renamed after a British army officer. In 1834, Major Harvey surveyed the area. Harvey River was named after Rear Admiral John Harvey, who was the Commander-in-Chief of the West Indies Station in 1818. The town had previously been referred to as Korijekup by the Aboriginal people, who called the area Korijekup. This word means ‘place of the Red Tailed Black Cockatoo’.
