Arts in Benicia is located in the former Commanding Officer’s Quarters and occupies land that was once occupied by the Patwin, or Suisun. Patwin people lived in the Suisun Marsh and harvested acorns from the surrounding wooded areas. Patwin groups typically numbered one hundred members and spoke the Wintun dialect. Large bedrocks in the area are hollow and were used by Patwin tribes to grind acorns.
