Laurel’s historic commercial artery

The development of South Laurel’s historic commercial arteries is closely related to the town’s history. The town’s early history mirrors that of many small industrial towns across the country. The town’s first mill opened in 1811, and grew to employ more than 700 people. It was called the Laurel Factory. Before the town was settled, Native Americans lived in the area. An old letter from that time hinted that the town may once have included a slave cemetery.

The town was home to several large family farms. In fact, as recently as the 1930s, nearly one-third of the homes along Main Road were owned by Germans. Most of these families were Protestant. Many of the residents of Main Road worked in the local agriculture industry. The town boasted three one-room schoolhouses. However, only one of them still stands today.

During World War I, the cotton mill in Laurel was used as a staging area for soldiers from Ft. Meade. In addition to its cotton mill, the town also had a movie theater. This theater showed first-run silent films and later, talkies. The 1930s were tough times for Laurel’s residents. A train came through town, and hobos would jump off the train and walk the sidewalks to their homes.

Laurel’s Dutch Country Farmers Market

The health department of Prince George’s County shut down Laurel’s Dutch Country Farmers Market on Thursday after it was found that the majority of employees were not wearing masks. This forced the market to close, leaving many people without a job. The health department says it will work with the market to get re-inspected and comply with the indoor mask mandate.

You can find fresh produce, organic meats, and candies at the Dutch Country Farmers Market. It also features a restaurant that serves Lancaster County recipes. You can also stop by the BBQ stand to grab a tasty sandwich. If you’re driving, park in a nearby lot. Parking is limited on weekends, so plan your trip accordingly.

The Farmers Market also features a cafe, restaurant, and a variety of vendors. Whether you’re shopping for a picnic lunch, a coffee break, or just for an evening out, you’ll find the perfect items at this unique market. From chicken and ice cream to meats and non-perishable items, there’s something for everyone at this market.
