Lago Vista is a lakeside community in Travis County. Located in the Texas Hill Country, it is just less than 20 miles from downtown Austin. Golf Course
The Lago Vista Golf Course is a par-72, 18-hole championship golf course with more than 6500 yards of play. Opened in 1971, the course is known for its undulating fairways, epic lake views, and abundant wildlife. The course is located on a peninsula along the north shore of Lake Travis.
The course has been in poor condition for several years. It is owned by the City of Lago Vista. Unfortunately, the city has hired an incompetent General Manager to oversee the course. In several interactions with players, this person has shown disdain and disregard for the golfers, as well as for the club. The city’s incompetence is a disservice to its members and the community.
In September of 2017, the Highland Lakes Golf Course was closed due to a series of vandalism attacks. Among other things, suspects etched “F- You” on a penis on the course and painted and mowed in obscenities. The incident led to the course being closed to the public for a few weeks.
Farmers’ Market
The Lago Vista Farmers’ Market is a great place to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables. The market is open every Friday from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., and many local businesses participate. A variety of products is available, from fresh vegetables to homemade jams. Many vendors are familiar faces, and they even offer classes and nutritional advice.
The market is less structured and crowded than city markets, making it ideal for families with children. Kids can browse the booths, pet the chickens, and enjoy the live music and kid-friendly activities. This market is also a great place to purchase handcrafted items, locally grown meats, and even home baked goods.
Cactus Rocks Trail
If you’re looking for an easy, moderate trail, Cactus Rocks Trail in Lagovista may be just the hike for you. This 1-mile loop is a beautiful and varied route, and it offers spectacular views. It also features a paved surface and is very easy to navigate.
Parking is available near the trailhead. The refuge headquarters is also located nearby, and a restroom is available for hikers. The trailhead is located on FM 1431. After parking, walk about one mile to the Cactus Rocks Trail. Located at the base of the refuge, there are restrooms and vault toilets. The refuge is a protected area, and dogs are not allowed.
The trail has two sections: the northern and southern sections. The northern portion is mostly flat and covered with cedar trees, while the southern section is more mountainous and has taller trees. The southern portion is shaded and features habitats for golden-cheeked warblers and black-capped vireos.
Cactus Rocks Trail is located just west of the refuge headquarters at 21646 1/2 E FM 1431, five miles west of Lago Vista. To reach the trailhead, follow the dirt road toward the north. The trailhead is a mile or so further up the road to the right.
There are also scheduled guided hikes on the Refuge’s website. Visitors are encouraged to bring water and wear comfortable shoes. It’s important to pack a hat and wear protective clothing, as the trails are closed to cars. The Refuge trails are accessible from FM 1431 and FM 1174.
