The Crystal Grottoes Cavern was formed when groundwater dissolved limestone rock. This type of cave is classified as a “solutional cave.” Because it’s made of soluble rock, calcium carbonate forms the walls and ceiling of the cave. These formations, called speleothem, are common throughout the cave. They include stalagmites, stalactites, columns, and stalagmite.
The only public showcave in Maryland, Crystal Grottoes is about an hour’s drive from Baltimore. It’s located near the Washington Monument State Park and scenic Frederick Valley.
