Berger Park
The former Edgewater lakefront home of Joseph and Lena Downey, now Berger Park, is now a park that serves the residents of Edgewater. The park’s redesigned mansion is on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1988, the Park District refurbished the homes and transformed them into a cultural and recreational facility. The park offers activities for residents of all ages, from senior aerobics to computer classes and jewelry making. Children are also treated to theater programs.
The cultural center located on the north side of Edgewater sits on 3.46 acres of land with lake views. Its location is ideal for a summer evening getaway. The center has a vibrant Park Advisory Council and a Black Box Theater that offers affordable performances. Berger Park is named after Albert E. Berger, a philanthropist and real estate developer. He was also active in numerous civic groups. Berger was a champion of creating a lakefront recreational area in Chicago and was instrumental in convincing developers to create these areas. In addition, he was an early proponent of adding beachfront land to the north side of Chicago. By 1937, Chicago’s Bureau of Parks and Recreation had managed 27 beachfront areas along the city’s shoreline.
St. Ita Catholic Church
St. Ita’s Church is a Roman Catholic church in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood. The church was built in 1927 in the Neo-Gothic style. It is located at 5500 North Broadway. The church building was designed by Henry J. Schlacks and was completed in 1927.
The parish was founded in 1900 with 53 families and today serves more than 900 people. The parish was originally located in a frame building. The church grew in size as the community grew. The area has easy access from both Lake Shore Drive and the CTA Red Line, as well as express buses.
