Ancient settlement

David Burnett, a local historian, recently presented a talk entitled “The Ancient Settlement in Chilton: The First Three Thousand Years”. The talk attracted a crowd of around forty people, and focused on the unique diversity of the history of Chilton. The town did not have a centralized town centre, but was rather a collection of scattered farms and houses.

Excavations began on October 23 and will end on Friday, November 8. In the long-term, experts hope to learn more about this ancient farmstead, which was occupied more than 2000 years ago. It is surrounded by a defensive ditch, and was in use from the late Iron Age (500BC) to the Roman era. The site’s main entrance and a large round house will be the focus of excavation.

In the Middle Ages, the area around Chilton was known as Chilton Trinity. It was then subdivided into three principal parts, and smaller settlements. The parish was divided into three Domesday estates in the thirteenth century: Chilton, Lott, and Pignes. During the fifteenth century, Pignes was considered part of Chilton Trinity, and the town was surrounded by the Parrett, the North Petherton, and the Cannington.

In the seventeenth century, most of the area in Chilton parish was covered in grass. In 1669, John Hill, a farmer, died in Chilton, and his will mentions that he used his land to grow hay. He had six cows and six yearlings, as well as 142 cheeses. The area was surrounded by Chilton Common, which was enclosed in 1802. The Chilton Farm, which Margaretta Michel owned in the 18th century, contains five hundred acres of land that was once intertidal.

Chilton Foliat, a village located in Wiltshire, is an ancient settlement with a long history. It is set amidst rolling farmland, with ancient houses and some thatched buildings. The village was designated as a conservation area in 1974. In addition to its ancient settlement, Chilton also has a medieval Church of England primary school.
