Trail of Terror
Several of the stories in Trail of Terror in Barron are influenced by HPL and pulp fiction. Often set in the American west, the tales depict a fading civilization in the backwoods. Olympia, Washington, and the Broadsword Hotel appear in other stories. In some cases, a reoccurring villain returns.
Barron combines genres and styles in his fiction, which he writes in a fluid prose style. His weird conceptions draw on the works of his forebears, but are always unique in the writer’s mind. Barron demonstrates an uncanny sensitivity to the human spirit, which has made him a favorite among contemporary weird writers.
Barron also demonstrates his skills as a writer in the solitary novel The Croning (2012). This novel was long in the gestation and composition, and is a lingering tease. It spans four decades and is a deliberately fragmented narrative. It is mostly concerned with the relationship between two people, Don Miller and Michelle Miller.
Sundown at the Shell
Sundown at the Shell in Barron, Wisconsin is an outdoor concert series that features local artists. Located at Veterans City Park, the concert series is free and open to the public. Each month, local and regional musicians perform original music. Sponsored by the Rice Lake Chamber of Commerce, the concerts are family-friendly events.

Earl Clanton Memorial Park
The 16-acre community park in Barron is known for its top-notch sports facilities. It has numerous baseball, softball, and football fields and is equipped with a press box, concession stand, and multi-purpose building. It’s a popular location for sporting events, and is adjacent to the Rice Lake Hockey Arena. In addition, there’s a fascinating museum located nearby called the Pioneer Village Museum.
If you’re looking for a concert, the Veterans Memorial Park hosts Sundown at the Shell, an outdoor concert series featuring regional musicians. It runs from July to August and features local food and drink vendors. There are also several events hosted by the Barron County Historical Society, including an outdoor flea market in June.
Barron is home to the Barron County Fair, which is held every July. It draws thousands of visitors. In addition to livestock and produce vendors, the fair also has concessions, live music, and a variety of other attractions. The Barron County Agricultural Society organizes the fair, which includes a beauty pageant called the “Fairest of the Fair Contest.”
Rice Lake Speedway
The Rice Lake Speedway in Barron will host a Labor Day weekend special, featuring a full racing program in all five classes. The event is sanctioned by WISSOTA and will feature extra money in all classes. Several area tracks will be off on Saturday, but the speedway will host a full racing program on Saturday night.
The speedway was scheduled to host the WISSOTA Late Models on May 9th, but it was cancelled due to rain on Friday and Saturday. The rain caused lousy drying conditions. Races will be rescheduled later this summer. Management hopes to hold a later race.
The Barron County Scandinavian Festival is another family event, honoring the traditions and heritage of Scandinavian culture. Visitors will enjoy live music and a carnival atmosphere in this event. Rice Lake is also home to the Pioneer Village Day Camps, which are designed for children ages seven to thirteen. These camps offer a fun, educational program as well as outdoor adventures. Participants will learn about the 1800s and how people lived there.
Rice Lake Speedway in Barron will not hold a race on Saturday, August 5. Races will resume on August 12th. The speedway will feature a full five-division schedule and a Hall of Fame night. The event will include inductees Jim Viltz, Don Folz, and Ione Harrington. Warmups will start at 6:30 pm, with racing scheduled to begin at 7 pm.
Pioneer Village Museum
If you’re looking for a day trip to a state park that will teach you about history and pioneer life, head over to Pioneer Village in northwest Wisconsin. This forty-building museum features an 1880s town, complete with costumed interpreters and demonstrations of traditional skills. The Pioneer Village Tavern serves refreshments and snacks, and the museum offers private events and group tours.
The Pioneer Village Museum contains over 50K items dating from the earliest days of America, housed in 26 buildings. The museum’s buildings were salvaged from rural locations and restored to look like they did when they were first built. The buildings are arranged chronologically to showcase the evolution of technology and life in America. The museum also has one of the nation’s largest collections of historic cars, including a steam car built in 1897.
The Pioneer Village Museum has a new summer kitchen, and the woodshop is operational. A replica one-room schoolhouse has been painted, and Silver-Laced Wyandotte chickens have returned to the museum. The museum is home to one of the largest events in the area, so make sure you visit in the warmer months.
Lehman’s Supper Club
Lehman’s Supper Club in the Barron area is a classic family-run restaurant offering traditional American dishes and a cocktail lounge. It has been in business for 80 years. The atmosphere is comfortable and the food is delicious. It’s also family-friendly, with a casual atmosphere, a large outdoor patio, and a billiards room.
Lehman’s Supper Club is a fourth generation family-run establishment that has won numerous awards during its long run in business. It has seven,386 square feet of finished space, a 1.80 acre site, and seats 200 people. There is also a private party room for up to 60 guests.
Wisconsin Rural Partners will hold its annual meeting at Lehman’s Supper Club in April. The event will include a bus tour to two other businesses in the area. In addition to Lehman’s, attendees can visit Perlick Distillery in Sarona and Norswiss Farms north of Barron. After the bus tour, attendees will have a reception at Lehman’s Supper Club.
Mountain biking trails
There are several mountain biking trails located in Barron County. The Silver Creek Trails are located in the Barron County Forest and span over 1200 acres. These trails are part of the Barron Area Nordic Trail Association. The trails are well maintained and have lighting that is operational from dusk to 10 pm.
If you are looking for a challenging ride, you may want to visit Devil’s Lake State Park, which is situated along the banks of the Wisconsin River. The park has four miles of mountain bike trails including medium and hard work sections. These trails include a climb of over 200 feet, which can be challenging for some riders.
Another popular trail is Timberland West, which is 2.5 km long and is located about one and a half miles south of Timberland Hills. This trail meanders through forest land and is ideal for beginners because it has no big hills. It is also available in daylight hours as a beginner level trail.
