Located on Maryland routes 404 and 662, Wye Mills is an unincorporated town in Talbot County, Maryland. It is near the border with Queen Anne’s County. The town is home to several historical sites, including Tintern Abbey and St. Mary’s church. It is also home to Goodrich Castle and Symonds Yat Rock.
Tintern Abbey
Tintern Abbey, a Cistercian abbey located in the Wye Valley, is a must-see attraction. The 12th-century abbey once encompassed a large area, including cloisters, gardens, infirmary, refectory, and guest accommodation for Medieval travelers. Since its rediscovery in the 18th century, the abbey has become a popular attraction in the Wye Valley. Whether you’re a history buff or you just love architecture, this place is worth a visit.
Tintern Abbey was founded in 1131 and is the second-oldest Cistercian abbey in the United Kingdom. It is located in the gorge of the River Wye. In the 15th century, King Edward II stayed at the abbey for two nights. During this time, the country was plagued by the Black Death, and the monks lacked funds to fund their mission. The abbey was also threatened by a Welsh uprising against the English kings, and the properties were destroyed. The abbey was also the closest place to the battle of Craig-y-dorth between Mitchel Troy and Trellech.
Tintern Abbey is one of the most beautiful ruins in the country. It is set in a picturesque valley and has ancient walls with majestic arches that tower over the river. A 45-minute hike up the steep Devil’s Pulpit allows you to get a bird’s eye view of the ancient ruins of the Abbey.
Goodrich Castle

Non-members pay the normal admission price.
Goodrich Castle is a medieval fortress that dates back to the 11th century. It was probably built as a defense against Welsh raiders and the walls are made of red sandstone from the castle ditch. This castle stood until the civil war when it was captured by Parliamentary forces and was left to decay.
Amid the rolling countryside, Goodrich Castle is one of the best places to visit in Wye Mills. Its mighty keep is made of green-grey stone, contrasting with the blood-red sandstone of the rest of the castle. The castle was once home to a powerful family of knights, the Talbots. Its ruins are still a beautiful sight today.
Symonds Yat Rock
If you’re in the area, you’ll want to visit the Symonds Yat Rock, which is spectacular by day and night. This ancient rock was the site of a fort built during the Iron Age. Its ruins are now a scheduled ancient monument and are the perfect spot to see raptors. Visitors can observe them through telescopes provided by the RSPB, and you can even see buzzards and goshawks.
The riverside town of Symonds Yat is a quaint little spot on the river, and it’s surrounded by wooded trails. The paths are varied in length and difficulty. You can take a hand-pulled cable ferry to the rock from either the Saracens Head Inn or the Ye Old Ferrie Inn. The ride costs 70p for a child and a half for an adult.
The views from Symonds Yat Rock are stunning, and there’s also a cafe nearby. The restaurant is located just before the ramp way to the viewpoint.
Tintern Old Station tearoom

If you have a sweet tooth, try the delicious homemade scones at the old station tearoom. It is set in 10 acres of lush green countryside. In addition to a cream tea, you can also enjoy the view of the river and the countryside. The old station building is also home to a miniature railway, a wooden train, and a play area for children.
Piercefield Walk
Piercefield Walk is a great way to get a feel for the countryside in this part of England. In the 18th century, the local elite used to spend their weekends walking around this area. A man named Valentine Morris laid out the path, making it a must-see attraction for visitors to the Wye Valley. The route includes five scheduled ancient monuments and a series of viewing platforms designed by Morris.
The octagonal temple-shaped structure, the “Temple Doors,” was demolished in the early 1800s. From the site, walk through the parkland to reach a viewpoint. The trail winds downhill, skirting the stone wall and trees on your right. A bus stop is located at the end of the walk.
There are several places to visit in Wye Mills. Piercefield House is a Tudor mansion. It was rebuilt in the 1780s by Sir John Soane. In its heyday, Piercefield House was one of the most visited places in the region. Unfortunately, the mansion was eventually abandoned due to the exorbitant costs of upkeep and confiscatory death duties.
Symonds Yat East Chalet
The Chalet is a beautifully crafted red wooden house in the picturesque Wye Valley. It was originally built as a show home for an exhibition in White City, London, in 1912. The wealthy Londoner who owned the property had it demolished and rebuilt it by the river Wye. Now you can rent the Chalet and enjoy a holiday on the slopes of the Wye Valley.
The Chalet has five bedrooms, all adorned with fab furnishings and comfortable beds. Four of them are doubles and one is twin-sized. The Chalet also has three bathrooms, one of which has a large roll-top bath tub. In addition to being a fantastic holiday rental, the Chalet has also been featured on Netflix’s Sex Education.
The holiday home has stunning views of the woodland and the River Wye. Its interiors have been updated and feature a beautiful colour scheme, which was created in consultation with Farrow and Ball. Its patio and garden provide plenty of space to relax and unwind.
