One of the major attractions of Shell Island was its music scene. Jazz musicians from all over the East Coast came to perform at the resort’s pavilion. The pavilion became a landmark in the heart of the beach. Unfortunately, it burned down in 1926, and no one is sure what caused it. Luckily, local historian Marc Farinella has been researching the resort’s history for over three years and has found many interesting pieces.

The resort was built on a 70-acre strip of sand north of Wrightsville Beach. It was one of the first places for Black people to enjoy the beach in Jim Crow America. It was visited by thousands of people each day, some as far away as New York. The resort was also famous for its pavilion, which featured music and dance performances. My master’s thesis examined the pavilion’s significance in Wrightsville’s history.
