Historic City Hall

The Ventura County Superior Court building was built in 1912 but did not have any structural steel reinforcement. In order to make the building more earthquake-resistant, the county poured gunite-sprayed concrete inside its walls. The terra cotta facade was then attached by small holes bored into the walls and an expanding epoxy adhesive was injected into them. In total, 3,000 gallons of epoxy were poured into the walls of the building. The building was renovated and now houses the Ventura City Council.

Ventura City Hall is a treasure trove of Southern California history and lore. Located on the top of California Street, the terra cotta building has a unique design and is a California Historical Landmark. Its facade is adorned with 24 whimsical faces of Fransiscan padres, who founded Ventura County in 1782. The building is also decorated with bronze gateways depicting bouquets of lima beans, a nod to the town’s lima bean past.

Before it was transformed into a city hall, it was a Ventura County courthouse. During the early 1930s, the courthouse housed the Ventura County jail. In 1968, the county vacated the building, but the city was able to purchase it and use it as city hall. The building was renovated for $3.4 million and has served as the city’s office since then.

The original courthouse was constructed in 1912. It was designed by the prolific Los Angeles architect A. C. Martin, who had previously designed the Higgins Building in Los Angeles. From 1912 until 1968, the Ventura courthouse was used by the Los Angeles State Court. But in 1968, the building was deemed too unsafe and was sold to the city. In 1972, the city purchased the stately structure and invested $2.7 million to renovate it into its city hall.
