Monona County Courthouse

The Monona County Courthouse is a red brick building located in the center of Onawa. It was built in 1892 and reflects the Romanesque style of architecture. The building is well-preserved and still serves as the county’s courthouse.

The county is made up of 10 communities. Its combined population is approximately 8,979 people. Its schools include four elementary and two middle school/high schools. Those living in the area will find a number of attractions and activities. For example, there is a history museum that is available in the county courthouse.

Onawa’s police department has several units. The department also has a SWAT team that responds to 911 calls. These teams are comprised of highly trained and specialized professionals. The police department also has an administrative unit that processes documents that help run the department. It also ensures that all law enforcement agents report for work and handles complaints from the public.

The Monona County Assessor’s office has a project underway. In January 2022, a reappraisal company will review the assessed values and communicate the results to property owners. The new values will take effect for the fiscal 2023-2024.

Up-and-coming florist and gift shop

Downtown Flower Shop is a cute storefront located next to Downtown Coffee & Cream. The new florist opened in April and shares a backyard patio with the coffee shop. The flower shop is an adorable garden spot that serves a practical purpose, as well as a beautiful place to sit.

Historic courthouse

Located in the heart of Onawa, Iowa, the historic courthouse is associated with county government and political power. The building is a beautiful red brick structure with a square brick tower and pyramid roof. It features a large arched front door, decorative metal panels on the gable ends, and a single story addition on the north side. This structure was built in 1892 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1981.

The county seat was originally in Ashton but was moved to Onawa in 1858. The county government then operated out of the Mechanics’ Hall. However, Onawa was constantly competing for the seat of county government, so it raised funds to build a new courthouse. It cost $7000 to build and was completed in 1892. It is a beautiful example of late Victorian architecture.

Onawa Public Library

The Onawa Public Library is an important resource for residents of Onawa, Iowa. It offers a variety of programs and resources for the community, promotes reading, and supports community activities. The Onawa Public Library is managed and publicly funded, and contains approximately 30,143 volumes. It serves the town of 4,552 people.

Onawa Public Library’s design has evolved significantly from its early book-lending roots. In 1890, the library was founded after Judge Addison Oliver donated the land and $20,000 to build it. Witt visited the ninety-nine Carnegie libraries throughout Iowa, noting that most had undergone additions over time.
