Located less than two hours from Austin, San Saba is known as the Pecan Capital of the World. Located in the Texas Hill Country, San Saba is home to several pecan farms, great barbecue, and Texas wine. You’ll also want to check out the Beveridge Bridge, one of the few remaining suspension bridges in Texas. The 1890s bridge was constructed with historic materials.
The Millican family grows 10 varieties of pecans on 1,000 acres east of San Saba. Kristen Millican says the Cheyenne pecans and Pawnee pecans are the best. The family grows and harvests the pecans annually, and every other year there’s a “bumper crop” of nuts. The harvest season usually runs from October through December.
For foodies, San Saba is also home to Napoli’s Italian Grill and the Great San Saba River Pecan Company. The Italian American Grill offers delicious pizza, salads, burgers, and seafood. Another San Saba restaurant is Oliver & Co., which serves breakfast, baked goods, and lunchtime meals. The cafe is located inside the Wedding Oak Winery.
Regency Suspension Bridge
The Regency Suspension Bridge is a one-lane suspension bridge across the Colorado River in Texas. It is located near the small town of Regency. The Regency Suspension Bridge is also known as the “Swinging Bridge.”
This bridge spans 340 feet from tower to tower and is an icon of San Saba. It was built with mostly hand labor by local residents and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its cables are made of 475 strands of No. 9 gauge galvanized wire and are anchored in concrete 134 feet behind each welded steel tower. Steel floor beams are suspended from steel suspension rods. Built to connect San Saba and Brownwood, the bridge was nominated for the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
The San Saba County Historical Museum: This museum features historical items from the area’s past. You can see furniture, ranching tools, and other objects from the area’s frontier history. Visitors can also sample olive oils made from olive trees, and sample them with butter and spices. Visitors can also visit the San Saba Olive Oil Company to purchase specialty olive oil, balsamic vinegars, and other products.
