Recreational opportunities
Ross Cortese started the Rossmoor Corporation in 1951. He acquired the land from Fred Bixby Ranch Co. His plan called for the development of 3,500 houses, six school sites, two shopping centers, and a medical complex. Later, he added business parks and non-retirement housing. He died in October 1991. The project is not completed yet, but Cortese’s original vision was widely embraced and carried out by others.
