Breweries
Breweries in Mukilteor started sometime around 1864. There was a stream nearby that was used for making beer. The stream, known as Brewery Gulch, was later dammed near the 3rd Street fill. Then, later on, a series of brewers operated the plant, including Joseph Butterfield.
The brewery is the original in town and is the oldest microbrewery in Snohomish County. In addition to their microbrews, they also run two restaurants in town. The original alehouse features stone-grill cooking. Other locations include the Brewpub @ MLT and the Production Brewery & Taproom at the company headquarters.
The former Eagle Brewery produced 500 barrels of lager per year, and sailing ships carried the product to outlets around the Puget Sound. While no visible relics of the brewery remain, the location is still marked by a ravine. Fifth and Eighth Streets still cross over Brewery Gulch, but the main flow of the creek is underground. In addition, the former N. J. Smith store at Park Avenue and Second Street remains intact.
The Mukilteo Eagle Brewery operated until 1882 when a fire destroyed the entire building. This incident was the result of an accident that occurred at midnight. George Cantieni, the manager of the brewery, was at home when the fire broke out. The fire was discovered at midnight, and it burned for several hours. The plant was valued at $2,000, and its owner, F. V. Snyder, decided to start over with a new brewery. Cantieni eventually relocated the operation to Seattle, and in December 1882, the Eagle Brewery opened its doors to the public in Seattle.
