The Red Brook is one of the few streams south of Maine that has a viable saltern population – brook trout that migrate between saltwater and fresh water. This stream has been the focus of conservation efforts for the last three decades by Trout Unlimited. With the help of the Lyman family, they’ve managed to protect the 650-acre watershed. The effort has garnered national attention, and has helped the Lyman family preserve the area.
Red Brook is also an important part of Lyman’s history. Theodore Lyman III visited Red Brook in 1867, while working for the Massachusetts Board of Inland Fisheries. He bought the property surrounding the stream, and eventually donated 638 acres to preserve its salter population. This watershed is home to many sea-run brook trout, which live in freshwater from spring to fall. In autumn, they migrate to nearshore ocean waters to spend the winter.
