Roxborough State Park

Roxborough State Park is a state park in Douglas County, 20 miles south of Denver. It is known for its dramatic red sandstone formations. It was established in 1975 and was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1980. It is a popular tourist destination for hiking and biking enthusiasts.

This park is close to Littleton and is a great place to hike and explore. It has a variety of trails that take hikers right up against the foothills. During peak summer hours, it can get crowded. Visitors should allow extra time for parking because it can fill up quickly.

In the winter, Roxborough offers cross country skiing along designated trails. Although it is located near the Denver metro area, it gets enough snow to keep the trails open for a few months. Dogs, horses, and bikes are not permitted on the trails. There are 14 miles of trails to explore, so cross country skiing will be a fun winter activity. The trails are also accessible for people with disabilities. The Fountain Valley Overlook is just a short hike away and provides a great view of the red rock terrain.

If you enjoy hiking, Roxborough State Park is a great place to visit. A connector trail runs south from the visitor center. The trail passes through a passageway created by scrub oak trees. Be aware, though, that the trail has poison ivy. The ivy is on the side of the trail, so be careful not to brush against it. While hiking, you can also watch for Western Tanagers, which also make their homes in this area.

For those with children, Roxborough State Park offers many family-friendly activities. For instance, children can earn a Junior Ranger Badge or Junior Naturalist Patch, which can help them gain more knowledge about their environment. Children can also participate in guided hikes led by Naturalists.
