Kauai Plantation Railway

The Kauai Plantation Railway is one of the places to go in Lihue that visitors can enjoy. The railway offers guided rides that take forty minutes to complete. The journey through the plantations is an educational experience for visitors of all ages.

The train tour begins at the Kilohana Plantation, a historic 105-acre plantation. You will travel on a 2.5-mile rail line that runs past groves of tropical fruit and original Hawaiian crops. You’ll also have a chance to see farm animals and experimental plantings.

The railroads started operating in 1881, with the first three miles of rail being laid at the Kilauea Plantation. By the time of World War I, more than 200 miles of narrow gauge tracks were in operation on Kauai’s sugar plantations.

Paulo is the oldest plantation locomotive still in use on Kauai. It was manufactured in Dusseldorf, Germany, and was used on the Koloa Plantation Company, the first commercial sugar plantation in Hawaii. It was used until the 1920s. Paulo is one of two firewood-fueled steam locomotives that were used in the construction of the Waita Reservoir, built in the 1890s. The locomotive weighs 10 tons and is still in running condition. It also puts in steam for special events.

In the 1920s, the plantation railways were almost entirely eliminated, but the Kauai Plantation Co kept them running until 1959. During the 1930s, the company used five GE diesel engines and a couple of old steam engines in reserve. In 1975, Mabel Wilcox helped fund the restoration of these historic trains.
