Upnor Castle
Places to go in Kent include Upnoor Castle, a former Elizabethan artillery fort that stands opposite the Chatham Dockyard, a major naval facility. Upnor Castle is a great place for the entire family to spend an afternoon or evening.
The castle is still in the same condition it was when the Dutch invaded it in 1667. An audio-visual presentation tells the story of the Dutch raid. The castle itself is a lovely location, with a stunning spiral staircase inside the keep. The stair is accessed by a hoist that hangs from a wall and may be the oldest cantilevered stair in England.
The castle is open to the public, with guided tours and sound wand interpretations available in English, French, and Dutch. It is located on the banks of the River Medway. You can get there by train from the Rochester or Strood train stations. There are many restaurants and shops in the town.
The castle was originally constructed to protect the Royal Navy’s dockyard and ships in the Medway. The Dutch took a Dutch raid on the English fleet in 1667, and the castle was pressed into service to defend the dockyard. The castle remained in military use until 1965, when it was opened to the public. Today, it is an English Heritage property.
Upnor Castle is open to the public from April to October, but closed for the winter. The castle is a great place to visit for an afternoon or an evening. Admission to the castle is free, but donations are required.
Chapel Down Winery
