Despite the distance, she was able to visit her family’s farm every weekend, where she rode horses and learned about agriculture. As a teenager, she joined Future Farmers of America (FFA) and began raising sheep, pigs, and chickens. She wanted to be a sheep breeder and pursue a career in farming.
Today, the Hondo Iris Farm is a popular tourist attraction. It is free to visit and is open all year long. Visitors are able to enjoy the irise flowers, as well as a botanical garden, a goldfish pond, a fairy garden, and folk art gallery. The farm is fed by the Rio Ruidoso, which keeps the area green and lush throughout the year.
Playground
The City of Hondo has many places to play for children. The Hondo City Park is located on the northwest side of the city, next to the fairgrounds. The main pueblo is located to the north of Arroyo Hondo. The community structure is south of the main pueblo. Its layout makes it easy for visitors to access it. The community had no obvious katsina associations and did not have the standard kiva wall and floor features. Perhaps the residents at Arroyo Hondo deliberately chose to live outside of the katsina system, or were excluded and inadequately connected to broader support systems.
