The chapel was constructed in phases, with the cornerstone ceremony taking place on July 16, 1949. Construction was interrupted by WWII, but was completed a decade later. Jester suggested that Lloyd Wright redesign the plans, and he agreed. The result was a chapel that was uniquely beautiful.
