Orient is a peninsula on the North Fork of Long Island that was home to Algonquian Indians before the 17th century. The area was originally called Poquatuck. In 1836, it was changed to Orient in deference to its easterly position on the North Fork. Orient Beach State Park was established in 1774 when residents of the Orient Peninsula decided to permanently preserve a 342-acre stretch of land as a common piece of land. The landowners felt that a park would be the best use for the land.

The town’s beaches are open to the public, but you will need proof of residency to visit the beach. Traffic control officers and beach attendants will check to see that you are a resident of the area. Rothman’s Department Store

The town is now home to a new community hub that is named after Einstein, the physicist who spent his happiest summer ever in Southold. Einstein Square is being developed around the old Rothman’s Department Store and will serve as a pedestrian plaza and neighborhood gathering place.

In 1939, Einstein and his family visited Southold. Einstein visited Rothman’s Department Store, where he bought a pair of shoes. He was a violinist and amateur astronomer, so Rothman stocked the store with local artists and musicians. Einstein even played a duet with Rothman during his visit.

In that time, he created many pieces in the impressionist style. Today, the building houses a cafe and the Southold General.

A recent addition to the Southold food scene is the Southold Social. The restaurant, on Main Road, serves up a local-focused menu. Some of the menu items include steamed mussels in spicy marinara, black squid ink linguine with shrimp and parsley, and lobster bisque. Einstein first visited Rothman’s when he was 60 years old. The music he was listening to was Mozart’s “Symphony No. 40.” Einstein was so impressed that he demanded that Rothman play the violin with him. Rothman complied and gave him a women’s size eleven sandal. The two men spent the rest of the evening chatting. The two men went on to arrange many musical events at Rothman’s Southold house, where Einstein and his friends would play for a crowd of up to one hundred people.

The current location of Rothman’s was first occupied by the local telephone company. In 1918, David Rothman purchased the current location and moved his store here. He also moved into a two-story house and lived with his family. The apartment that is currently the store’s office was previously the home of the local telephone company. Today, the store is run by Ron Rothman, the grandson of the original owner.
