For those who are interested in photography, Sandstone Falls is a great place to visit. There is a boardwalk that can be walked over the falls, allowing for great photo opportunities. Aside from the boardwalk, visitors can also take a short hike through the New River Gorge to view the waterfall and surrounding area. The park has over 100 miles of trails, ranging from easy to difficult. Many of these trails are connected so you can complete a longer hike if desired.
After your hike, make sure you stop at the Sandstone Falls Overlook for a view of the waterfall and riverbed. To get there, park at the Sandstone Falls Overlook parking area off of Route 20, which is two miles south of Sandstone, West Virginia, and 7.5 miles north of Hinton. Bathrooms are located at the trailhead so you don’t have to take time to find a restroom.

Canyon de Chelly National Monument
Canyon de Chelly National Monument is among the most spectacular and mystical places to visit in the United States. The canyon’s spectacular sandstone cliffs embraced 200 million years of geologic history, and 5,000 years of human history. Visitors can view the canyon’s spectacular vistas from various overlooks.
Canyon de Chelly is located on the Navajo Indian reservation and is managed by the Navajo Tribal Trust. The National Park Service has partnered with the Navajo to preserve the land. The park is free to visit, though access is limited. Visitors are only allowed on designated trails and must be accompanied by a Navajo guide or park ranger. Visitors may explore the canyon’s ruins on the White House Ruin Trail.
Canyon de Chelly is a stunning area that includes many different types of sandstone formations. The cliffs are colorful and awe-inspiring, and the flora and fauna that inhabit the area are amazing. The area also boasts natural basins that have been carved out by erosion, leaving behind large and small pools that reflect the surrounding scenery.
The Puebloan people once lived in the canyon, building pit houses and homes within the cliff walls. Later, the Hopi inhabited the area and planted corn and peach orchards. The Navajo eventually occupied the area, and a small portion of the community still lives there. Today, about 40 Navajo families live within the canyon’s valley. Their homes and farms are scattered throughout the canyon.
The town of Chinle is just a few miles from the canyon, but does not have many lodging options. There is only one hotel inside the canyon, the Thunderbird Lodge, which is a Navajo-owned and operated lodge. This lodge offers comfortable rooms and a souvenir shop. The lodge is also the only authorized lodging facility within the canyon, and offers half-day tours and guided tours.
Havasu Falls
Havasu Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in Arizona. It drops more than 100 feet into a turquoise lagoon. You can hike to the falls, or even rent a helicopter to reach the top.
