Miamisburg is a city in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 20,181. It is a suburb of the Dayton metro area. The city offers an excellent array of tourist attractions. Here are a few: Carillon Historical Park, Paul Laurence Dunbar House Historic Site, Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum, and Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center.
Carillon Historical Park
Located in Carillon, Ohio, Carillon Historical Park is filled with authentic exhibits. Set on 65 acres, the park is the perfect destination for a family outing or excursion. In addition to its historical buildings, the park is also home to the 200-foot Carillon Tree of Light. During the holiday season, visitors can visit Santa Claus and shop for holiday gifts. The park is open daily from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.; however, the park is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Visitors can also explore the Wright Brothers Aviation Center, which houses the largest collection of Wright Brothers artifacts. The Wright Flyer III, the world’s first practical airplane, is a highlight of the museum. It is also home to some of the Wright brothers’ most famous airplanes.
The Carillon Print Shop is another popular attraction for visitors. During school field trips, students can take part in a Printing 101 workshop to learn how to set type and how to operate equipment. The Carillon Print Shop will be fully operational by the summer. It will also feature a soap shop and a demonstration foundry. Visitors will learn about the history of foundry operations in Dayton and how these machines function.
The museum also houses a collection of historical public transportation. Its architectural style is inspired by the architecture of roundhouses that stored locomotives on a massive turntable. The building’s tower and deep overhanging eaves evoke the style of those historic buildings. There is also a sub-scale railroad operated by the Carillon Park Rail & Steam Society.
Paul Laurence Dunbar House Historic Site
The Paul Laurence Dunbar House, once home to the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, is now a historic house museum. The house is owned by the state of Ohio and is operated by Dayton History on behalf of the Ohio Historical Society. It is also part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park.
Visitors can view Dunbar’s personal belongings and literary treasures. This site was also home to Matilda Dunbar, who lived there until her death in 1906. This site has been named the first state memorial in Ohio to honor an African-American. It also displays a bicycle built by the Wright Brothers. Paul Dunbar died in 1933 and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.
The house is open to the public every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It is closed on Mondays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The Paul Laurence Dunbar House Historic Site is free to visit. You can visit the site by walking or taking a guided tour. The visitor center includes a film about Dunbar’s life. There are also other artifacts on display.
The historic site is part of a 150-year commemoration project called “Dunbar 150.” The project celebrates the life and work of Dunbar and is part of an ongoing collaboration between the National Park Service and local community leaders, historians, and Dunbar enthusiasts.
Dunbar’s literary accomplishments and works contributed to the growth of social consciousness among African Americans. He was the first African-American to earn a living through his writing. His works were widely read and became part of the literary world.
Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center
The Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center is located west of downtown Dayton, Ohio. Visitors can find the center at 16 S. Williams Street. The center has interpretive displays, interactive exhibits, and an introductory film about the park. It also features a gift shop and bookstore.
The Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center was named for a friend of the Wright Brothers, Paul Laurence Dunbar. He was the first African-American poet to achieve international recognition. His poetry and literary work influenced writers such as Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison. Born to former slave parents, Dunbar catalogued the challenges faced by African Americans in the post-Civil War era.
The Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center has two buildings that depict the Wright brothers’ history. The Dunbar House is located on 200 acres. It was home to Wilbur and Orville Wright. It is now owned by the Wright Family Foundation and is open for tours every Wednesday. Admission costs $12 for adults. Visitors can also see the Paul Laurence Dunbar House located on the same property. The Wrights’ childhood friend, Dunbar created hundreds of works during his short life.
The Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center is a great place to learn about the Wright Brothers and their first flight. The museum contains exhibits and films and is open Wednesday through Sunday. It is located at 10550 N. Springboro Pike in Miamisburg. The Wright Flyer III was the first commercially successful airplane, and the Wright Brothers also repaired bicycles for a living.
The Wright Brothers’ original bicycle shop is also located within the Wright Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. The Wright Cycle Company is a National Historic Landmark. It was the place where the Wright brothers first dreamed of man in flight. The Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center contains exhibits about the Wright brothers and a parachutes museum.
Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum
The Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum is one of the oldest garden cemeteries in the United States. It is located at 118 Woodland Avenue in Dayton, Ohio. It is a beautiful place to visit and explore, especially if you’re interested in history.
This cemetery opened in 1941, and is now a botanical resource with over 3,000 trees, including 25 of the 58 native oak varieties. It also has a chapel with a Tiffany window, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
You can also bike or walk along the Great Miami River Trail, which runs 93 miles along the river. This trail is multi-use and paved, and features a picnic area. The cemetery contains the gravesites of renowned individuals, including Dayton Daily News founder James M. Cox and former Dayton Mayor Henry Cox. There are also the remains of a former U.S. Representative from Ohio’s 3rd District. Cox also ran for President of the United States in 1920, but lost out to Warren G. Harding. Another place of memorial is the Huffman Family Vault, named after Huffman, a local businessman and founder of the Huffy Bicycle Company.
Located near the University of Dayton, Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum is one of the best places to visit in Miamisburg. It is one of the oldest garden cemeteries in the United States and features one of the finest Tiffany windows in the country.
