Marlborough is a city located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Its population is 41,793 as of the 2020 census. Wither Hills Farm Park
Wither Hills Farm Park is a working farm and recreational area owned by the Marlborough District Council. Devil’s Den dolmen
Devil’s Den is a dolmen burial chamber that sits on Fyfield Hill near Marlborough, Wiltshire, England. This dolmen is part of a larger neolithic passage grave on the nearby Fyfield Down.
Devil’s Den was first recorded by William Stukeley in 1723. He described it as a long barrow with three massive sarsen stones. These are similar to the Welsh Cromlech. A dolmen is a chambered tomb made of stone.
This dolmen has a capstone with dimples in it. It is said that the water left inside the capstone attracts demons. It’s about two miles from Marlborough’s Beckhampton roundabout. This site is located at the north-east side of town.
The original chamber was over 230 feet long and was similar to the West Kennet Longbarrow. Today, only two standing stones remain, with the capstone weighing 17 tons. The original chamber was dismantled and reconstructed in the 1920s, but it’s impossible to tell how many tons it once weighed. Nowadays, the dolmen is protected by a concrete support, which holds the large stones together.
