The reservoir was once used to supply water to the Pennsylvania Canal. It was built between Johnstown and Pittsburgh. However, the canal eventually became obsolete. The reservoir’s dam collapsed on May 31, 1889. At the time, the reservoir was only half full. The owners had removed the drainage pipes beneath it for scrap, but they did not know how to repair it.
