Historic Brigham City Depot
The Historic Brigham City Depot is a landmark in the city center of Brigham City. It is the only commercial building in the region designed in the Craftsman style, featuring a double hip roof, dormers, and overhanging eaves supported by wooden brackets. The Brigham City Depot was constructed in 1906 by A.C. Rainey and 22 laborers. The building features a large bay window and is 38 by 98 feet. The north waiting room was for men, while the south waiting room was for women.
In the early years, the Brigham City Depot played a crucial role in the town’s economic development. It was a central hub for the transportation of local fruit. The depot also served as the destination for freight from the nearby Knudson Brothers cannery. Additionally, the Depot shipped large amounts of mail, including mail for residents.
Brigham City’s original plat included a central square and public space. The sawmills were powered by Box Elder Creek. Water was also channeled into millraces to power the grist mill and planing mill. The development of Brigham City was a time of growth and prosperity for the city.
The restoration of the historic Brigham City Depot has begun. Volunteers have stripped nine layers of paint from the walls and removed unsympathetic alterations. Wainscoting has been restored and the painted pine floor is nearing completion. In the near future, the south waiting room will have a research library. In addition, the windows are being scraped and the eaves painted, and the wood shingle roof is being replaced.
